Look closely at this postcard, in the bottom left-hand corner: there’s a logo depicting a column surmounted by an eagle, or something similar. At the bottom right of the column, there’s a number: 12043, and just below it, another number: 31253.
The postcard itself is fairly classic, with the title “A colonial infantry barracks”. But what really catches the eye is the majestic driveway that leads to the barracks entrance. The location is Saigon, and according to the date inscribed at top right: December 29, 1903, confirmed by the cancellation stamp on the back of the card, the view is taken before 1903.
The publisher of this postcard produced postcard between 1899 and 1904, then mysteriously disappeared. He seems to have been active at a time when local publishers were rare. Cartacaro believes it may have been a German or Austrian publisher, distributing maps in China and the Dutch East Indies. Why not in Cochinchina too, on the route between Marseille and Shanghai?
